CHOOSE YOUR OWN CATHARSIS
Choose your own Catharsis was a two room installation, a personalised participatory process and a live art work presented at Critical Animals in NSW 2018. Exploring speculative practices for communing with the more-than-human, the immersive experience was tailored to each participant to provide reflection on ecological entanglement and play at the production of sense-based knowledge, in a one-on-one encounter amidst soundscapes and spatial design.
Exploring the origins and consequences of nature/culture dualisms, this intimate work invited participants to speculate on how new practices might be developed to offer pathways to human reconnection to the more-than-human biosphere. Choose your Own Catharsis was developed using ecological methodologies of working slowly and closely with site and all aspects of the design and content of the installation were directly responsive to the Awabakal and Worimi land surrounding Newcastle in NSW. This process of development necessitated confronting the challenges of making site-based work as white artists on stolen Indigenous lands, an enquiry that is ongoign and active in both artists work.
This work was accompanied by a panel discussion on Ritual in Contemporary Art, which you can read more about here.
